Reducing Global Catastrophic Risks

Strengthening evidence, governance, and coordination, with an initial focus on Africa.

“Global catastrophic risks are events that could cause widespread and lasting harm across multiple countries or generations. Our mission is to build the evidence and systems needed to prevent them.”

Our Focus Areas

We concentrate on global catastrophic biological risks, working across research, policy, and practice.

Biosafety & Biosecurity

Strengthening governance frameworks in laboratory and research settings.

Dual-Use Research

Managing potentially harmful scientific knowledge and research oversight.

Policy & Legislation

Identifying and addressing regulatory gaps in biological risk preparedness.

Education & Training

Developing workforce capacity in biosecurity practices across Africa.

Why Africa?

Many African countries face higher exposure to biological threats alongside limited regulatory capacity, constrained public health systems, and gaps in research oversight.

Despite this, much of the existing research on catastrophic biological risk focuses on high-income settings. We aim to contribute analysis that better reflects the realities, constraints, and priorities of the Global South.
