Who We Are
A research and policy organization focused on reducing global catastrophic risks, with an initial focus on Africa.
Our Mission
Many countries in Africa face higher exposure to biological threats alongside limited regulatory capacity, constrained public health systems, and gaps in research oversight.
Our work is motivated by the view that reducing global catastrophic risk requires stronger evidence, governance, and coordination in regions that are often underrepresented in global risk research.
Our Structure
Itser Limited currently operates as a registered Nigerian company. We are in the process of transitioning to a not-for-profit structure to better align with our public-interest mission.
Why This Work Matters
Rapid Technological Change
Advances in biotechnology and AI are increasing both the benefits and risks of scientific research. The geographic distribution of research capacity is changing rapidly.
Governance Gaps
In many African contexts, legal frameworks, institutional oversight, and professional training have not kept pace with these developments.
Our Approach
We prioritize context-sensitive approaches while aligning with international norms and adapting them to local realities.
Evidence-Led
Cautious in our claims and explicit about uncertainty. We let data guide our decisions.
Context-Sensitive
Accounting for differences in legal systems, institutional capacity, and local resources.
Practically Focused
Interventions that are feasible, scalable, and aligned with existing systems.
Collaborative
Working in partnership with local and regional institutions to maximize impact.
